So I watched a youtube video of these two processors. In most games, the i3 4170 beats the i5 4460 in few FPS. I think it's because the higher clock speed of i3 4170 3.7ghz vs i5 4460 3.2ghz

Some says the i3 4170 is dual core, I do believe so, but when I entered the DXDIAG, it says:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4170 CPU @ 3.70GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.7GHz

That's 4 CPU processor on i3 4170. Are these physical 4 cpu or just 2 physical cpu + 2 hyperthreading stuff.

Because I'm thinking of upgrading my i3 4170 into i5 4590k or any processor with the same clockspeed. (for revit modelling)

With a B85 motherboard, you can not do cpu overclocking, regardless of the cpu.

Essentially 4690 and 4690K are exactly the same with out overclocking. They each have a stock speed of 3.5.

You do have an option with a i7-4790K.
It has 4 cores plus hyperthreads. 8 threads total.
More importantly, it runs at 4.0 stock which will be fine with your B85 motherboard.
No overclocking needed.

If you are a gamer, then you want the best single thread performance you can get.
Few games will actually use more than 2-3 threads.

The 4790K will be a winner for you if your budget permits.
The i3-4170 is a dual core with hyperthreading.
In task manager, it will show 4 threads.
Two threads are fast, two are slower(perhaps 1/3)
If your app can fully utilize all 4 threads, the i5-4590(there is no K version) is perhaps 30% more capable.
Run your app and check the task manager.
If you see all 4 threads running near capacity, a i5-4590 would be a good upgrade.
Even if you see activity on all 4 threads, but not fully utilized, that is only windows allocating activity across all available threads.
If your activity is about 25% across all 4 threads, you may well be cpu limited and single threaded.

If your motherboard allows cpu overclocking, like a Z97, then a i5-4690K with an overclock would be much better, regardless.

I'm a hardcore gamer, but I do not have any experiences on overclocking. And I believe that my ASUS B85 Pro Gamer isn't safe for overclocking. (Z series are for overclocking)

3.7Ghz - 4.0 Ghz processors (without overclocking) should be enough for me.

Whats the difference between 4690 and 4690k?

Well you basically answered your question. The K letter is the difference, meaning that 4690k i unclocked and you can increase it's speed but you need Z motherboard for it. If you don't have it (b85 can overclock slightly) go for 4690 without k letter in the end :D

The B85 Pro Gamer can be used for overclocking. It will first need a BIOS update to make that CPU even work.

I'd still recommend a Z97 motherboard instead for better overclocking and features, especially for a 4690K.
