I just did a clean install of windows 7 professional 64-bit on my skylake build and I was able to install windows 7 fine, I even installed the usb drivers, chipset drivers and the rest of the drivers needed. I installed it from a dvd (it had service pack 1 on it) and had a brand new product key (never used on another pc), even when I go to system properties it says that "windows is activated," but when I plugged my ethernet in and connected to the internet, windows update isn't finding any updates. I open windows update and it has been searching for updates the last 30 minutes now and found nothing, Does anyone knoe what go be wrong because I know the dvd would not have the most recent updates? Yes, my internet works fine I am able to go on google chrome and surf the web.

Solution
You should leave your computer on, let windows updates search for updates. You want to ensure to go into the power options and disable system standby.

I have a home desktop that after I re-install windows it takes 4 hours for updates to populate before I can download.

At work, some of our computers after fresh install take all night to find updates. No explanation as to why.

do I need to leave my computer on and let windows update keep looking until it finds something or do I just turn of my computer and turn it on tomorrow?

I would double check the Windows Update settings and make sure the option is checked to search for Recommended Updates.

Another thing you may have overlooked... Take a peek at your notification icons (next to your clock). It is possible that Windows is ALREADY downloading your uploads in the background (depending on your settings)... that could explain your problem as well.

After I do a clean reinstall of Windows...I usually set my Windows Update Settings to full manual... so I have complete control of the updates while I install them (Windows 7).

When I installed it I did use full manual, and I checked the notification area and the update history and there was nothing there. I just opened windows update and it says checking for updates with the green bar moving accross, I guess all I have to do is leave my pc on and wait correct?

was that in it originally ? I cuda sworn i read that OP twice. Must be getting old :)

Nevertheless, I'd still look up that "fix" WU slowness KB and install that one manually as many folks have described it helping them enormously. Mine was fine one week and slow the next, and problem was described as being fixed by a KB which made a fundamental change in the way WU works / uses memory.
