Upgrading from HDD to SDD, do I NEED to clone?

I'm currently running a two storage drive system build.
One 120gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD (as my boot drive) and one 1tb WD Black 7200rpm HDD (as my storage drive).

I plan to upgrade the 1tb HDD to a 1tb Samsung 850 Evo SSD.
Since the drive I'm upgrading is not my boot drive, is it necessary to clone, or can I just drag and drop to the new drive?

My current HDD has games and programs installed on it. If I do the drag and drop, will those programs be transferred over as well, so I don't have to reinstall anything?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but cloning grantees that no re-installation of programs will be necessary, right?

There's really no reason why you shouldn't clone the contents of your 1 TB secondary HDD to the Samsung 1 TB SSD. Since the two disks have the same disk-space capacity there's obviously no problem with the volume of data to be cloned over to the destination disk.

I don't see any reason for any awkward, time-consuming drag & drop operation when the Samsung Data Migration program that will be packaged with your Samsung SSD can do the job simply, effectively, and within a very reasonable amount of time.

Thanks, just curious, what are sector sizes? And what problems could they entail?

Ah, I forgot that the SSD should come with migration software. Ya I might end up using it if it comes with the SSD. Thanks!

Sounds right on. Really fortunate, especially considering I just ordered the SSD from Newegg on sale. Thanks!

Well if it does come with a migration tool, then that tool should align it for you and you won't have a problem with it.

Hey follow up question, can I leave my HDD in the PC unplugged? I mean, it's not physically harmful to just leave it in there, right?

I do have the original packaging, but it's in the garage and I'm just too lazy to go get it and properly put the HDD away.

Yes. It won't hurt anything.
