I came here several years ago for advice on building my son a gaming computer under a different username. Got a lot of great advice and his computer is still running strong today. He recently asked for a controller to use with his steam games. His cousin started using an old wired xbox controller which got him considering it.

I am looking for opinions on this. I am debating between getting him a steam controller or an adapter for him to use his wireless xbox one controller. Any thoughts, specifically pros and cons between the two? I understand the adapter will be cheaper but since this will be a birthday gift, cost isn't really a factor. I am more focused on what would offer the better experience for him. Thanks in advance.

Steam controller is a PoS. Just get the xbox one controller, especially if running Win 7,8, or 10

If you want specific reasons:
1) Misplaced analog stick, it's actually harder to use when down than up
2) No real d-pad
3) Misplaced buttons, putting them below the second dual-axis interface means you need to hold it exactly as intended or else you'll accidentally move the axis when trying to press the buttons (i.e. no claw type grip)
4) Poorly designed triggers/bumpers, not enough definition between the two and you'll end up hitting both more than you think
5) Requires special code in game to use properly. XBO controller on the other hand is built into direct x itself!

Personally I use a wireless Xbo360 controller which is one of the original tried and tested methods (surely the Xbone controller could only be better!), and a couple of PS4 controllers. The PS4 ones don't need an adapter as long as the PC has bluetooth, and you can use DS3 to change the colour of the light on the front which I really dig :)

Personally I much prefer the PS4 controllers, but then I do also have a PS4, so it was a natural choice.
