Dear friends,

I want to buy a hard disk and make it external with enclosure and use them for backup my data. My desktop pc has a 1 TB recertified western digital hard disk on which I cannot depend on greatly. There are many hard disk brands available - HGST, toshiba, seagate and western digital. I don't know which brand of hard disk should I buy for data backup. Some vendors here are suggesting me to buy toshiba cause it is cheaper than seagate and western digital. Others are offering me recertified and refurbished hard disks, mainly seagate and western digital, and hard disks manufactured by chinese companies I never heard of. All the vendors are offering me 1-2 years warranty.

Also, should I buy two 1 TB hard disks or one 2 TB hard disk? Some vendors told me 2 TB hard disks fail frequently so I should get 1 TB ones instead and some told me to buy even larger capacity (3 TB/4 TB) hard disks. Do larger capacity (3 TB/4 TB) hdd lasts longer and function better than low capacity (1 TB/2 TB) hdd?

I will appreciate any of you giving your opinions and suggestions and share any experiences in this regard so that I buy the most reliable hdd and do not get ripped off buying the wrong brand hdd for backing up my data.

Thanks in advance.

HGST disks are very reliable. If you buy a larger capacity (and use appropriate automated backups) you can keep multiple copies of everything. You can make daily or weekly backups and save multiple versions. That way you can go back further in time if you delete something and don't immediately realize it.
