i7 4790k thermal paste

Im currently upgrading my system now and im stuck with applying thermal paste because im not quite sure if i still need to apply thermal paste to the heatsink or just on top of the cpu. Any advice would very appreciated.

I personally spread thermal paste on the heatsink and then plug on the cpu.I dont think there's a specific reason to spread it on the cpu,cause only the contact area between heatsink-cpu transfers the heat.

I am using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186038. Works fine and it is suitable for any level of a computer user. It is only heat conductive(transfers the heat but won't damage any electric component if it touches it). As for applying here you have a whole video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2MEAnZ3swQ
