Hello guys, I'm having a really hard time deciding which monitor to get. I've been looking at some youtube videos and I absolutely love the way IPS monitors look compared to TN panels but I can't decide if I want to sacrifice that refresh rate of 120/144hz (as my budget is $300). This monitor will be for gaming so from what my research has told me, most people would go with the the 144hz TN panel. My problem is that my eyes can really tell how much better the picture is on the IPS panel and i just love the way it looks. I've never gamed at 120/144hz and people swear by it that it is completely awesome. Maybe since i've never gamed at 120/144hz I'm thinking of just going for the IPS. Or will i be missing out?

BTW I am in the process of building my first rig. Here the link of what I've got if it makes any difference. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9bJ9f7

Thanks

Well, this is really a 1440p vs 144 hz questions. At $300, 1440p is the way to go. 144hz is must if you play competitively, but not so much for everyone else. TN panels have poor color reproduction and bad viewing angles and thats the main reasons why I don't buy it. The increase pixel counts make the game look A lot better. With your 390, you will take full advantage of it.

That is not a given.
My current 2 Asus TN panels look better, and similar viewing angles, to the 2 HP IPS panels they replaced.

You seriously can't tell the real story from videos. Viewing angles shouldn't be a problem since you typically view it straight on like a normal person. I'd go with va much more than either ips or tn if you care about color in a gaming situation.

I was generally speaking. Of course $500 TN panels will still look better than $100 ips panels. When priced similarly, the ips panels look far better.

They were very similar price. The HP IPS was $290 for the matched pair, with a very nice stand.
The Asus TN were $135(?) each, still using the same stand.
I still have one of the HP's, looking for a use.

And color calibration on both sets is/was done with a hardware hueyPro colorimeter.
One of the original HP's died, so for about 6 months, I ran one HP and one Asus TN. Nothing I did could make the HP IPS look quite as good as the 2 year newer Asus TN. Tweaks, calibration, nada.

Close, but not quite. And I do a LOT of photo work, so color accuracy is important.

Good point. I've thought about gaming at 1440p but I'm also worried about not hitting a steady 60 FPS on all the games i'll be playing. Mostly first person shooters and fallout 4. Now i know sacrificing FPS for picture quality isn't a bad idea but that means I will also be sacrificing the refresh rate if i go with the IPS panel. So my question to you is, what would your preference be? TN panel 144hz with super nice frame rates at 1080p or IPS panel gaming at 1440p with "mediocre" frame rates and 60hz?
