he only kept the case and a (in my opinion) pretty crappy power supply, and he now has an amd cpu and when he tried to start it, before he put in the ram, it just blinked, but even with the ram now, it still just blinks.

Solution
If it was froma Dell or HP it may actually be wired to work only with a speccific set of motherbds and putting it on an aftermarket board would cause some of the power lines to connect to ground. The PSU would either detecd the short circuit and not power up (blinking to let you know theres a problem) or just blow up...

Right now my vote is a new PSU since usually Dell is the only ones I see with leds in the PSU.

not sure, but he hates when ever I ask about the psu, saying that it is not because of it, so I can't ask without him being angry.

it would help if you spelled out what his system specs are and all he upgraded ??

like said above with a prebuilt some aftermarket parts may not be compatible on them like certain graphics cards or most don't give a cpu support list so you don't know whats up there as well lots of time dell hp or who ever has there own proprietary bios's and may not be fully open to most upgrades out side of what they approve or may allow

look how many guys get told ''ya, that gpu will work '' and just find themselves sitting in front of a black screen or cant get past the bios splash screen even changing out all the psu's in the world

bottom line is a prebuilt is only guaranteed to work with what it came with out of the box new anything above that is all your own risk

you buy - you try- and hope it don't make you cry
