i have an AMD 1090t overclocked to 3.8ghz and i think its getting a little old and would like to upgrade to intel. i have a gtx 970 which i suspect is being bottle necked a little too. i'm not sure of the difference between i5 and i7 and if hyperthreading is worth it. i would like to stay with ddr3 since i bought a 16 gb kit not too long ago, but if i have upgrade to ddr4 i wouldnt be too upset. i'm in Canada and my budget is $600-750 for mobo, cpu and possibly ram. thanks everyone

Few games can make use of more than 2-3 threads. It is more important that they be fast.
For that reason, a gaming cpu will make very little use of the i7 hyperthreads.
I5-6600K and a decent overclock is as good as it gets today for gaming, bar none.

DDR3 ram will perform about as well as DDR4.
One issue is that skylake requires low voltage ram.
If your ram is 1.50v or less it can work.
But DDR3 support is typically found on lower end budget motherboards.

You can buy a i5-6600K, a ZA170 motherboard, and 2 x 8gb of ddr4 ram for about $650 Cdn.
A Z170 motherboard that supports DDR3 seems to cost $30 more, probably not worth it.

Hyperthreading will help when recording while gaming, otherwise it is not worth it unless you do other heavily threaded tasks.

I would go for a Asrock Extreme 6 (or similar board of your preference), 4690k and a nice AIO watercooler or big heatsink (D15 for example). That would be roughly $500 depending on the cost of the board.

would upgrading to an fx-8370 be about the same as changing to intel? thanks for the product list. it really helps

No comparison, a 6600K or 4690K, even 4670K runs circles around a 8370, I've got a nice 8370 rig in my shop, I primarily built it for support here and it seldom gets used by anybody. Had a 3570K rig until a few months back, it got more use than the 8370
