is a gainward gtx 770 2gb around the same size as an evga gtx 660 ssc 2gb ?

Gainward 770 - Product Size: 274mm x 112mm (that 274 is the length of the card, the 112mm is the width as looking from the top down on the card).
EVGA 660 SSC - 241mm x 111mm

It's 219mm x 125mm

Both of your other cards are older, use more power, and generate more heat. Also the 660 is as lower tier card than the 770. The STRIX can be overclocked to equal a 770: http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=17899

well i can get that 770 for £128 atm and i dont want to spend over that amount but unfortunatly it may not fit in my case

The 770 is a big card, same size as my old 680s (Fermi generation). Take a measurement on what you *can* fit in there. Also, the nation you are in depends availability as well on your options...especially on the used market which I assume you are looking at with these older GPUs.

length wise id say 245mm max and im in the UK and that 770 is brand new off amazon they must be clearing stock

My 970s in SLI are overclocked to 980 SLI performance. Of course you need to make sure you have good cooling like dual fans of the STRIX with ASUS and ACX with EVGA.

how would i overclock the gpu

You'd need to download and install MSI Afterburner and just up the core clock and memory speeds. Very simple process. If you get the card, plenty of people here will help walk you through it. There are also plenty of videos on Youtube out there walking you through the process step by step.
