How to set up network with two WANs with no load balance and gateway control

Hello everybody!

I am working at my University and we have an old PC working as a "router". It has BrazilFW to direct traffic of the LAN through two different ISPs: One internet access is provided by my University, and the other is provided by the phone company.

I want to change this old PC for a Router (like a Cisco Router for example, something easy to set up and 'modern')...

Some description about the situation:


  • · Currently, all the users by default use the internet provided by my University
    · The PCs that use the phone company's internet do that through a Proxy
    · We have PCs connected with cable, and others connect through 5 wifi access point (also phones, notebooks, visitors... etc)
    · IPs are assigned by DHCP because of the WiFi hotspots
    · We have about 50 computers, and ~30 users connect also their phones to the WiFi

So what I want to do, is replace this old server, with a Router that can handle this Internet access... By default, everybody can connect to the internet provided by the University, but some users with special privileges must have access through the phone company.

If you want to use a cisco commercial router all you need is one with 3 ethernet interfaces. You can also use many of the dual wan routers on the market.

In all cases the tricky part is configuring them to send traffic from certain machines to the secondary ISP connection. Although it is pretty easy to describe in words getting it to work in the device is not always as straight forward.

It can be done you just have to read the manuals for the router you buy.
