GTX 960 4GB OC vs GTX 970 4GB Stock

How well does an OCed 960 stack up to a the stock speed of a the 970? Prices for the 960 are pretty good. Is the extra $100 justified compared to the around $200 960?

It is definitely worth the extra for a 970, but if you do not have the spare cash, the 960 will perform well at 1080p. I would take a stock 970 over an overclocked 960.

There is a significant performance jump, no overclocked 960 will match a 970. You can always overclock the 970 too. There are many benchmarks out there.

Is it worth it? Well only you can decide that

Even if you can push the clock to 1500mhz on that 960, 970 still way faster.

4GB on GTX960 is useless. The computing power will give a lot sooner before you can fill 4GB.
GTX970 or R9 390 is the better option by far.

None of the Nvidia current cards are good... especially in coming games ( DX12 )

If NVidia using DX11 is faster than AMD using DX12 than it's not really a victory.

NVidia/Maxwell also has a higher OC for OC performance that isn't even shown here (Maxwell can hit 1500mhz with moderate OC).

If we are talking about GTX9xx and R9 3xx, by the time DX12 became mainstream, you are already on your way looking for newer and better GPUs.
It does not matter if it is nVidia or AMD.
If the rumors are true about having a huge performance jump, even Pascal and Polaris will make all current GPU near obsolete already.
No need to make a fuss on DX12 topic for now.

Personally i'm not really that excited with DX12. and frankly i've already seen something that i think would happen when more developer use dx12. The signs can be seen even when AMD still pushing mantle around.

Honestly i'm waiting. Waiting on when dev complaing about how broken DX12 are and how amazing DX13 is.

My question was pretty much answered. I'll have to rethink what exactly I want to do. I may get something good but cheap to hold me over until stronger GPUs are released.

A 950 for $120 is my favorite budget GPU at the moment, you may have to wait a while for more performance per dollar in the mid-range.

I don't have a GPU right now. I figure I'll just get something good maybe something like a 770 off Ebay. I could just sell that when something new comes out sometime this year.

Well it seems new gpu were coming out in summer as well. Maybe there will be better option available later especially on amd side. Because when new gen gpu comes out there is big chance they will 'fire sale' their current gpu. On nvidia side stuff like this was rare because they usually EOL their card much earlier to prevent having to do massive discount on their older card.
