Hi I am wanting to get a better antenna for my netis wf2116 wireless N USB adapter. http://www.netis-systems.com/en/products/wireless%20usb%20adapters/71.html#.Vu01dN8zqQk

I found a few online that are 18 dbi, would my device have enough power to power an antenna like that or should I get something lower like a 15 dbi antenna?

also I don't have to buy 2 do I ?
can I just replace 1 of the 2 5di antennas it came with?

I really don't know what to get so I thought Id ask here before buying anything thanx.

I would be skeptical about 18dbi antennas. You really have no way of determining how much gain you are actually getting from the antenna. It might seem bigger but make no change in your reception.

You would have to buy two to get balance of the two radios that unit has. It is an N300 because it has two radios each capable of a maximum of 150Mbit.

thanx for the reply and info,

so if I have to buy 2 and there is no guarantee that an 18 dbi will work would I be better off buying something like this http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Booster-Antenna-Quality-Shipping/dp/B01CWJ48XG/ref=sr_1_26?ie=UTF8&qid=1458476070&sr=8-26&keywords=2+10+dbi+wifi+antenna

I just want the best antenna I can get for my device, I need something that will make a very long range connection 1000 feet or more, the access points I need to connect with are straight ahead, nothing up or down.

Not going to get 1000ft with any antennas like that especially if you have anything in between.

Maybe a direction antenna might work. In most cases you are better off using a outdoor direction bridge from say ubiquiti or engenous.

Still most time you need directional antenna on both ends.

If you are attempting a 1000 foot connection then what you need is an outdoor directional device like this -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6ZP3KE4578 You bring the signal inside via ethernet cable and then either direct connect or use another access point to provide WIFI.

I would rather get something to replace the antennas my device came with, but thanx for the link I will keep it in mind if I cant get an antenna that works for me,

I emailed netis asking them what the most dbi my device can power and they just are NOT wanting to provide me with support for my purchase,

I just need to know what level of dbi my device can power, if I buy somthing too high dbi then wouldn't it be like trying to power a light bulb with a AA battery as to where it wouldn't have enough power to power it, and be completely worthless?

if that is correct, that is what my concern is with buying an 18 dbi antenna I just don't know what my device can handle.

The transmit power of your device is fixed. It won't change based on the dB gain of an antenna. A higher dB gain antenna isn't "powered" by your device. The antenna is a passive device. A higher dB antenna should radiate the power more efficiently and amplify the received signals more.

With all that said, you are probably wasting your money (not much money from the links you have provided) trying to connect to a 1000 ft access point.

well... it might not really be 1000 feet but it's pretty far, from looking at it I would say about 500-700 I'm really not sure.
I have 2 x 5dbi antennas that came with my device and have 1/4 bars on the access point it "kinda" works lol,

I know this http://www.amazon.com/Super-Power-Supply%C2%AE-871W-G-E-K9-Air-AP1252AG-/dp/B00DTWOHE6/ref=sr_1_60?ie=UTF8&qid=1458490060&sr=8-60&keywords=super+power+supply+2+x+dbi says it's for a router but would it work for my usb device and would it work much better or be a waste of money?

or maybe I should buy 2 of these

@billg001 and I both said an outdoor directional access point is the correct answer. You can keep asking but the answer will stay the same from me.
