Installed a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Overclocked GDDR5 Video Graphics Card, 4GB in my 2.0 pci slot. Will not load, just get blue intel screen and computer freezes.
processor Intel core i7-3770 @3.40ghz
bios version EBH7710H.86A.0053.2012.0213 date 2/13/2012
Board Intel DH77EB
Has anyone encountered this problem?
Could updating Bios solve this problem?
Would returning the card be my best bet and getting a card that works with pci 2.0 , if so are there ones that would compare to the 970

Solution

Which 750W. Might be good might not....
go into your bios and make sure its set to read the pcie slot as primary display adapter and as stated download and do the latest bios update to your motherboard. Also download and install the latest drivers for your motherboard. After thats done uninstall any previous video card drivers then reboot and try again with the gtx 970. Do you also have the correct power cables connected to the video card? Video cards that are pcie 3.0 work the exact same on pcie 2.0. Theoretically 3.0 is supposed to be faster bit we havent even hit the full usage of 2.0 yet really. Tests have been done and I think 3.0 was like 5% faster in some tests. There is no incompatibility there. My wifes computer is pcie 2.0 and she has a 970 running perfectly fine. Also yes motherboard bios being out of date can indeed cause issues with new gpu's. What was in there prior to the gtx970?

Thanks for info, will try your suggestion , old card gtx550, pretty sure power cables correct. Never have done a bios update or mother board, need to do some research on procedure before attempting.

Yea go to your motherboards manufacturers website and search the latest bios for your motherboard and also the drivers. It should tell you how to do the bios update if not just google it. Usually its done via a usb drive and your bios screen or sometimes from windows itself.

Did the bios update and board driver updates and it has seem to do the trick, running good, thanks for the info. Was told by Computer builder that the pci slot was 2.0, but after looking up info on intel board DH77EB looks like the slot is 3.0 , which is good, at least that is what i get from the info . Intel says as long as its a generation 3 or better i7 chip the slot will be 3.0 compatible. I down loaded the manual for the DH77EB motherboard from intel and thats what I understand from reading it, but with my limited knowledge on this kind of stuff I wouldn't bet the house on it. Again thanks

Below is what I read from manual

from intel manual for board DH77EB

"• Integrated graphics support for processors with Intel HD Graphics: ― High Definition Multimedia Interface* (HDMI*) v1.4a
― DVI-I v1.0
― DisplayPort* v1.1a
• Support for a PCI Express* 3.0 x16 add-in graphics card
Note: PCI Express 3.0 is only supported by 3rd generation Intel Core
processor family processors"

Intel Desktop Board DH77EB Technical Product Specification
1.3.1.2 PCI Express x16 Graphics
3rd generation Intel Core processor family processors support PCI Express 3.0, 2.x, and 1.x and 2nd generation Intel Core processor family processors support PCI Express 2.x and 1.x:
• PCI Express 3.0 with a raw bit rate of 8.0 GT/s results in an effective bandwidth of 1 GB/s each direction per lane. The maximum theoretical bandwidth of the x16 interface is 16 GB/s in each direction, simultaneously, for a total bandwidth of
32 GB/s.
