I have removed a hard drive from a laptop that is giving me trouble. I've attached the hard drive to a working laptop using a SETA cable. I am trying to copy the files from the hard drive to an external hard drive that is attached to the working laptop. While the hard drive does show up as connected to the laptop, I am unable to see any of the files to copy them to the external hard drive.

Please advise if there are any settings I can adjust on the laptop, an application I can download to assist with the transfer, or any other method to copy the files from the hard drive without resorting to a large check payable to the Geek Squad.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi there 1jackw,

The drive is 2.5'' right? You should be using some sort of a SATA to USB adapter right?
If this is the case, you need to go to Disk Management and see how is the drive recognized over there. In case it has no letter assigned, you may need to assign one.
In case it shows up as unallocated/RAW, you may need to use some data recovery tool: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

After that, it may be a good idea to test the drive with some testing tool that can provide SMART report as drtweak suggested.

Let us know how this goes,

I'm asuming you mean eSATA and not SETA cable lol

well first off with the drive attached download and run crystal disk info in my signature. lets see if it the drive is good or bad. If it says good we can move on. If it says caution or bad copy and paste the details here.

I ran Crystal Disk Info and the results were 'Good'. To provide additional information, the drive is 2.5" and I am using a SATA to USB adapter. The drive is assigned a letter by my working laptop.
