When the next gen graphics cards come out will similar specked cards be better

Just wondering if you think when the next gen graphics cards come out that say
a gtx 980 would be worth getting used or if the newer cards would have so much more processing power that a similarly priced card (in the future) will be hands down too much better.

Will a new 4 gig card beat out a 6 gig older card for example?
will it matter the application?

No-one can answer your question regarding how well the newer cards will perform because no-one has seen the new cards, let alone benchmarked them. As to getting an older generation card, you will absolutely start to see price drops because NVIDIA, AMD, and their partner companies will all want to get rid of as much of their older stock as they possibly can. That means you'll probably find 900 series cards getting at least a $50 price drop very soon.
