Does Xeon E5420 fit in Dell Optiplex 780?

Hello!

I can currently get ahold of a used Dell Optiplex 780 dirt cheap, and I do have a pre-modded Intel Xeon E5420 lying around at home.

Is the CPU compatible with that PC?

Thanks in advance!

Probably not since Optiplex 780's often have an LGA 775 socket while the Xeon E5420 can only be used on an LGA 771 socket. The one your looking at might have a different set-up so it would be a good idea to see what CPU it already has.

Another thing to note, I'm not sure the version of 780 your looking at (micro ATX, mini ATX etc) but I have the really small one (mATX) as a spare computer and it gets seriously hot. This is because it has a really bad designed CPU cooling set-up and it can't be replaced. Just something to consider if you decide to buy it and put a more beefy CPU into it.

Thanks to both of you!
I have ofcourse checked all specs of the e5420 beforehand, and I know it is a lga771 CPU.

That is why I did write "pre-modded", that means I have a e5420 that fits in LGA 775 socket.
(Which the 780 have.)
And it is a mini Desktop model, so heat should not be an issue.

My only concern is that the BIOS might not recognize it, and that is why I would want to know if anyone have tested it?
