Age old Question, CPU or MOBO?

Hi,

I have 10-12 years of experience with computers which include building them, changing out parts etc.

Today I tried swapping out a 550 watt PSU with a newer 750 watt one. When I did, everything turned back on but I got no video. So I tried reseating the vid card a couple times. I noticed a metallic smell, which I chalked up to the PSU being used for the first time, so didn't think much of it since everything still turned on but video.

To make sure my video card wasn't fried, I put in 2 other cards which also failed to produce video. Panicking, I took out the new PSU and put in the old one back in. Still nothing...

I swapped out the CPU with an older AM2 not even sure what it was, but it fit...still nothing.

So at this point, I'm almost sure its the mobo. But my question is: Why does stuff still work,?The cpu fan which is only attached to the mobo turns on, LED lights are on etc.

My specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte 970a-d3p
CPU: FX-8320

did you try your ram in another pc?

not the greatest board, you really need a 140w board for the 8 cores.

but there is a jumper on that board.

is the cpu power connector in, I miss that every once and a while , will do the same thing

Did all that except clear the CMOS. Not sure how to without jumpers...unless removing the battery does that...in which case I did :).

Is it possible the board couldn't handle that much wattage? I thought it would take up to 1100.

And if I fried it, why is the fan and power LED light on?

I pulled RAM from another workstation and still nothing. I'm assuming when I pulled the battery it cleared the CMOS.

Thanks for the help thus far. Not sure what else to try. Can you fry parts of the board and not others? Would explain why fans are still getting power and either the cpu or gpu parts aren't working? I'm sure now that the smell came from the board and not the psu(well pretty sure, heh).
