Is My Hard Drive Dying?

About 3 weeks ago I ran into a strange issue with my computer. While downloading a video game, I was also browsing through the web. Suddenly, everything froze and I couldn't do anything. Eventually my computer forced a shutdown with an error. I tried to reboot, but continuously got "error 0xc00000e9". Eventually, my computer did a repair and I was able to get back in and just paid it as a possible one-time issue and I was only going to begin to worry if it happened again.

It happened again today :( . Similar issue. Tried to open Microsoft Word. Windows Froze. Eventually I receive a message saying Windows ran into an issue. I did a forced reset and everything loaded up just fine. I'm typing this from the very computer experiencing the issues.

I've done some research, especially for the previous error 0xc00000e9 and seen that it could possibly be linked to a dying hard drive. Additionally, I've been experiencing a strange issue in a video game I play where character models and even terrain will suddenly disappear or turn completely yellow. I similarly looked up this same issue and found some who suggest it might be due to a failing hard drive.

So here I am. I hope this is enough to go off of. Are these symptoms of a failing hard drive or do you think there might be another culprit at play here? If it is a failing hard drive, do you have any recommendations on my next steps to take?

Any reallocated or pending sectors are a sign...
It may be worth grabbing CrystalDiskInfo to see your drives SMART status.

Hard drives track multiple values over time. Some to watch out for are Pending sector count and reallocated sector count. These are related to a section of the drive that was no longer reliable so the drive maps them out. The problem is these kinds of things can get bad pretty fast so I backup at the first sign of these kinds of issues.

I downloaded CrystalDiskInfo. Both Reallocated Sectors Count and Current Pending Sector Count are showing up as yellow dots next to them with a big ol' "Caution" yellow button at the top. I assume this isn't good.

I'm not too familiar with what a crash dump is. Here's the type of screen I got.

Yes, your hard drive is failing, memory address 0xc00000e9 is associated with bios settings. There is a possibility that you damaged the hard drive physically corrupting the PCB board and disk, this is the worst case scenario. Now for the good news,

The second possibility is that is is a hardware related issue between the communication of the BIOS to the DRIVE, this can be caused by Viruses entering the BIOS and changing port configurations.

To solve this go into your BIOS settings, go to the peripherals and make sure that the drive and ports are set to SATA, Not PATA, ATA or anything else, this is most important and should resolve your issue. I recommend after wards just replacing and reseating the SATA connectors and the Power plugs for your HDD, this should resolve your issue. Let me know if it does not, as if it does not, then option 1 is most likely the culprit.

Much regards, goodluck m8

Any reallocated or pending sectors are a sign of failure for sure.

Sorry about the late reply, but Can you get the raw value of those 2 parameters. Either way, I think it is time to backup and replace the drive.
