Greetings all,

Reviewed the boot problems post and ran a few searches so I don't believe I've missed anything, but redirect me if I have.

Working on a new build, my first since 2009 and first entirely on my own so I'm pretty much a scrub. Here's the layout: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/crnKCJ

First attempt at powering on didn't do anything. Noticed that the PSU made a brief "vzt" sound when I flipped its on switch up so I figured something was briefly going on then shorting out. Did some research and I figured out it was probably the motherboard/case shorting as I had only installed screws on its 4 corners, and those were also the wrong size (so it's possible they were touching the case and shorting, or I had positioned it wrong otherwise.) Dumb mistake.

So I reinstalled the motherboard, paying closer attention to the S340's layout instructions this time to make sure it was on top of the case's standoffs (8 of them, all built-in) and used the proper-sized screw in each place where the motherboard lined up with a standoff. Still nothing. Checked and made sure every other component was accounted for - 8 and 24-pin connectors plugged in, CPU fan plugged in, power button pins connected.

I'm wondering if the motherboard is still shorting on something, partially because the s340's instructions are somewhat vague on getting the motherboard lined up with the case standoffs. Check out the motherboard section here: http://downloads.nzxt.com/manuals/S340-manual-multi-language-5.pdf

In the second picture there are three screws going through the top of the motherboard, the far left and the far right into the case's top AUI holes respectively. However, it indicates a third screw going through a middle hole in the top of the motherboard and the z170 4s doesn't have one. Same thing for the bottom row of screw inputs on the motherboard. (Highlighted with arrows here for reference.)

Here's how I have things installed right now:

Red arrow = screw installed. Green = Goes over the s340's standoff-H. Blue = The manual did not appear to call for a screw in this area, only screws for the holes on top and bottom.

Normally I'd account for this just being a generic picture in the manual but given that everything else seems to be working I'm wondering if I'm just missing something obvious and still shorting something somewhere. When I flip the PSU switch on I can hear it make a quiet, high-pitched hum so I assume it's at least working well. The other option is that my first attempt either fried something on the motherboard or the oversized screwheads damaged something. Hoping its the former, haha.

Apologies for the novel and thanks for your consideration.

Tested outside the case via both the power button and the "screwdriver to the pins" method and no dice. Must have shorted the motherboard...New one ordered, lesson learned. X_X

Installed the new board and everything is running as it should. Let this be a cautionary tale to new builders not aware of motherboard shorting...Thanks again for your help.
