How much damage did I do to my card?

I have a EVGA 980TI and i just realized i had my graphics card fans off while playing division and all my games ... i am very suprised it even ran but i had it like that for about a week. did i cause damage to the card do you guys think? It would randomly shut off a few times (mostly when duel monitoring) which i suspect it overheated but wondering if my motherboard z77 extreme 6 saved it from causing damage.

Solution

I doubt you've done any real damage to the card.
All modern GPU's have an auto-shutoff protection feature.
Most of not all motherboards also have safety shut down features as well.
It could be that the card's fan is defective or firmware faulty, and that is the reason for the fan not running under stress.

How exactly did you turn off your fan? The card will throttle itself if it gets too hot and even shut down to protect itself from heat.

thanks i just ran rise of the tomb raider 4k and no problems... the weird thing is it would never shut off while i was playing a game only when i was duel monitoring for Netflix via HDMI cord to my tv. which i guess is more strain then the division at ultra 1920 x 1080

in the precisionx16 i clicked the auto fan off / on button and the grayed out compared to white is hard to tell if its on or off because the fan meter never moved so i set it to agressive profile and that fixed it

The auto fan feature turns the fan off when the card is not under load to reduce power and noise. It does not turn the fan off when it's needed, only at idle and only when the temps are lower than a safe, set value. That's a feature of EVGA cards. My 980 Ti SC ACX 2.0+ does it. It means the card is working normally.

Hello, I'm new here and don't want to start a new thread; I hope I am not violating any rules by asking another question; I think it should be OK considering the OP's question was already answered. I just replaced my card with an MSI GTX 970, and testing it out with The Elder Scrolls Online on Ultra settings, it ran beautifully-- until a few minutes later when I noticed it getting choppier and choppier. I ran the MSI Gaming App and turned on all the stats and noticed that my fan was 0 RPM and my temp was climbing to about 95 or so. I don't know if it ran higher than that in my last run of the game which was only a few minutes also. I looked into my case and noticed that my wires were blocking the fan from moving. I reorganized the wires and the card is now clear and the fans are working. Playing the game a little longer, I was no longer going above 60 degrees. But my FPS is only about 45-60 on Ultra (in both gaming mode and OC mode)-- which worries me because other people are getting above 60 fps. I realize it could be a PC limitation as well; I have an i7-3770K with 16G RAM. I ran MSI Kombustor for 12 minutes and FPS was 180-200 and temp went up to 75 degrees very gradually.

I'm assuming I didn't do much if any damage to my card, but I just wanted to confirm that with you? Thanks!

I should also note that I did smell the "electronics smell" when the fan wasn't working. It wasn't a burning smell per se...

I have done this as well except on my CPU cooler! i have this giant thing http://images.bjorn3d.com/Material/revimages/coolers/TT_Frio_OCK/A5.jpg
(not a picture of my computer)
My wire that powers the mobo is relativity short and got in the way of pull fan and stopped it, my computer quickly shut off. I also smelled the electronics smell and i have had no problems but again that was the CPU so might be different! As for you problem i am running on a 17-3770k oc'd to 4.2 and trust me its not limiting! I have noticed on some games i get locked to 60 fps like on THE DIVISION i get framed locked to 60 even tho i have frame lock turned off and can EASILY go above and beyond that! It could be something with your settings in game that is making it lock at 60?
