Hello everyone this is my first build. I plan to use it mostly for gaming as well as a media center to watch tv shows and movies.

The stryker case comes with 2x 120 mm fans in the front one 200 on top and a 140 mm in the back I plan to swap them all out for noctua fans (2x 120 mms in front a 140 on top and a 140 in back). I believe this will set up a negative pressure setup. Would that be good or should I add another intake on the bottom to set up positive pressure? I believe this motherboard only has 4 fan connector ports. Is it possible to connect more than 4 or will the motherboard only be able to control 4 fans maximum?

I was thinking of getting a gtx 970 but opted for a gtx 980 for futureproofing as well as potential to game at 1440p later.

Any opinions or feedback on this build will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks pretty nice, although I can't say much about Noctua fans personally.
Are you sure you need the 6600k? If you're not an overclocking nerd, you could go with the 6500 as it's cheaper and almost as fast.

I was thinking noctua for a cpu cooler since it seems to cool well as well as stay silent. In terms of the case fans I've heard good things about them as well with the only issue being the color but I prefer quality over the look regardless. Are there other case fans you would recommend that are of similar quality or better to noctua? I was considering doing some overclocking with the 6600k which is why I chose it. I've never done it before but was interested in doing it. Is it worth the extra to do an overclock?

instaed than buying a gtx980 which has the worst ratio fps/$, get a R9 fury, this card is getting better and better with last drivers and DX12 support. Nvidia is releasing Pascal in Summer 980 will lose half its value in 3 months and will be nerfed by drivers to push new cards sales. Psu is overkill, a 650W is more than enough

Hi,

Your build is pretty good, but there are some things I would change.

  • The I5 6500 is a very good performer, for less than the 6600k.
I have changed your CPU cooler and motherboard, because they are complete overkill and overpriced. The CPU cooler I have changed it to is very good, and the motherboard is much more competitively priced.
Changed your PSU to a higher quality, and more suitable unit, from SeaSonic (they pretty much make the best PSUs)

With all the money saved, (and without skimping on quality too) I have put a 980ti into your build. Which is better price/performance than the 980, and will last you longer.

Overall, my suggested changes to your build will make it perform even better, and it costs less.

Hope this helped, see my changes below:

I was thinking of trying some overclocking plus at microcenter the 6600k is 219.99 which is only about 10-15 more than the 6500. I thought the nh-d15 was one of the better coolers on the market and I figured it would be useful for some overclocking. Also Im aware of seasonics great reputation but i've heard good things about the supernova series plus I thought its 10 year warranty would be useful as well?

You are correct, that the NH-D15 is a very good CPU cooler, and the G2 is a very good PSU, but the GTX 980 is really not worth it for the price, so I changed your GPU to a 980ti for much better price-to-performance value, meaning that I had to change the CPU cooler, PSU, and CPU to different components that are a bit cheaper (still high quality components though) to counteract the more expensive GPU.

I would never recommend the 980. If you can't fit a 980ti into your budget, then I would suggest the GTX 970, or R9 390. They are both very good cards, and are capable of running any current/new games at 60 FPS in 1080p on high settings.

Oh ok I see what you mean my budget would be under $2000 so I wouldn't mind bumping up to the gtx 980 ti. Is there a certain brand you recommend I was looking towards MSI. At that price range would you recommend changing anything else or should I keep what I chosen? Also would you think its worth waiting for pascal at the end of the year or just go for it now?

Is there a certain brand you recommend I was looking towards MSI.

I would recommend going with MSI's Twin Frozr branded GPU. I've owned 3 cards from MSI that have all been fantastic, although it really doesn't make a huge difference, as all of the non-reference cards are very similar. They just have slightly different overclocks, and colours, etc. Nothing major. You should just go for the cheapest card you can find, from a reputable company, like MSI, Sapphire, Asus, Gigabyte, etc.

At that price range would you recommend changing anything else or should I keep what I chosen?

No, everything else in your build is absolutely fine.

would you think its worth waiting for pascal at the end of the year or just go for it now?

That's quite a hard question to answer... It really depends on how eager you are to play games, what games you want to play, etc. You could always buy a cheaper GPU for now, to last you up to the next 12 months, and then buy a Pascal GPU. It's up to you.

Looking at the storm stryker I realize how large it is and was considering to go for the fractal r5. Since it comes with 2 140 mm fans I was thinking of getting a 3rd also from fractal to match as an intake in the front. Do you think that would be good for over clocking cpu and gpu since I will still have noctua d15 cooler and the twin frozr? Or should I go with the different fans altogether?
