I recently bought a gtx 960, and everythig was going perfect, until I played with the ram clock in the BIOS (because windows says 4gb usable from 8gb, but that's another story), then I started to have poor performance on games. I've tried installing windows in another hdd and installed a few games but I had the same results. I haven't oc either the cpu and the gpu. I guess that something went wrong with the mother board or the RAM, because the gpu is new. I don't know what to do, so if you guys have an idea of what could it be, please let me know.

My pc:
Processor: AMD FX-8320e @ 3.2 GHz
Mother board: ASRock N68-GS4 FX
GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960 Windforce
RAM: G-skill 8gb (2 x 4gb) (F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Solution
I think your problem is your motherboard. It is not at all suitable for gaming with a FX8320e or even a FX6300. The power delivery system looks weak and lacks heatsinks. When you are gaming, the high-performance demands on your CPU is causing the power delivery to overheat and throttle your CPU.

Try playing with the case open. It may help. Also, you can temporarily zip tie a case fan so that it blows directly on and cools the VRMs on your motherboard. If this helps, you have identified a major problem. There may be others we can identify when this one is solved.

Yep, it is exactly that, yesterday I turned off 4 cores and I got very good performance, so problem identified, overheat. Do you recomend getting a new motherboard or a good cooler for the cpu? Thanks for answering.

Are you using the Stock Cooler? If so, theyre Horrible and Loud. Try something like a Cryorig H7, if your case allows.

Yes, I'm using the stock, I think that's too big, what about a thermaltake clp0607?

NO! There are TWO things to be concerned about. CPU throttling AND motherboard throttling. While the stock CPU cooler is weak, your system should do better than this. Replacing it will cool your CPU better, but it will NOT solve the motherboard overheating. By turning off cores you reduced the motherboard load to an amount it can deliver well.

If you get a new CPU cooler get something like the RAIJINTEK Pallas, a downdraft cooler, that will cool the motherboard, VRM, and memory as well. A cool CPU will still run slowly if the power delivery is throttled.
