I custom built my PC just so I could play XCOM 2 and a few other newer releases. Now I've taken an interest in recording my gameplay for youtube. I've noticed that my pc is a bit sluggish while editing and compressing the vids. Would it benefit me to upgrade to the 8350 from my current 6300 or should I just overclock? Specs below:

Mobo: gigabyte 970a-ds3p
CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE 960 4 GB
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 1866 Mhz
PSU: 600 W Bronze

I'm currently using the stock CPU cooler and realize both options will require better cooling. Also I'm pretty sure I'll need a new PSU either way as well. Any help would be appreciated. Also I'm aware Intel offers better gaming performance but didn't want to drop that kind of money.

Solution
I bet you could get by with your 600w, even with mild overclocking on an FX-8xxx. You probably already know but:

-FX-8xxx will give noticeably better encoding performance
-FX-8xxx will give marginally to no better single-threaded performance, especially after overclocking
-FX-8xxx will cost more than just the cost of the CPU, due to the need for a better cooler, minimum

I would personally recommend an 8320e or 8300 as a more cost effective solution. Sell the 6300 and you won't be much in the red.

The ds3p isn't really good enough to run a fully fledged 125w 8 core mate , I'd argue that the 8320e is a side (maybe even a downgrade) due to the reduced base clock.

Your 6300 has plenty of oomph for encoding.
An aftermarket cooler & a push to 4.2ghz will pay big dividends if you're currently running at stock clocks - your board will manage that fine.

^ no you're right it does , & if you happen to be UK you'll also be paying a big premium for it.
What PSU model do you have ??, if it's half decent I can't see any reason you'd have to upgrade.

You are aware if you're using YouTube's native edit/compress method this has absolutely nothing to do with your systems cpu power ?? Its all done on YouTube's servers.

So my options just got a bit broader. If I upgrade to a 8350 I'll probably take the advice for the new Mobo so I have better over clock options. I can buy a water cooler and crank my 6300 up to 4.2ghz. Question on my PSU though. I neglected to mention I have dvd burner and 2 7200 rpm 1 tb hd's. Will the 600w still be enough with the added cooler and the over clock?

I think 600w will be enough, but if you're going to be changing motherboards, you're probably better off going Intel. AMD chips can make great drop-in upgrades but the fundamental design of FX-8xxx CPUs hasn't been updated since 2012.

^ you don't need a liquid cooler for a 6300 mate seriously.
4.2fhz is doable easily on any decent 92-120mm air cooler - you're looking at £20-30/$25-35 absolute max .

What's your case model & country??

You've got a fairly solid mid-range system, upgrading the board & CPU at the minute doesn't make sense IMO .
Wait 6-8 months for zen to drop if you can , All the evidence is actually pointing to amd delivering this time round.
