I have an Asus P8H67M Pro motherboard with on board Realtek hd sound. I had been running XP and finally had to replace the failed hard drive. Decided a rebuild was in order. Added a SSD as C: drive which made the thing load at light speed. I decided to go to Win7 Pro for the operating system. Everything worked good and all the programs with one exception went in without a hitch. NO Sound. I loaded the new Realtek drivers 2.79 automatically. There is no sound from speakers that I plugged in, and there is no optical link LED illumination. As well the manager was absent. The strange thing is the mixer registered sound levels on the optical output as well as the speakers. I don't understand this. I then deleted the drivers, and went through a manual install of them. rebooted the machine, and still no joy.
Has anyone ever dealt with the same problem? If so I need help with this one.
Many Thanks

Checking your motherboard, it may be because it has
"
Audio Output Support
S/PDIF-out on Back I/O Port

[S/PDIF-out on Back I/O Port] This motherboard provides convenient connectivity to external home theater audio systems via optical S/PDIF-out (SONY-PHILIPS Digital Interface) jacks. It allows to transfer digital audio without converting to analog format and keeps the best signal quality. "

And maybe that's not compatible with whatever speakers you're using. Maybe there's settings in your BIOS you can disconnect
or enable; you can check if you haven't, such as selecting HD instead of AC'97 or vice versa. Alternatively, you should check for BIOS updates and also actually list your full...

Here's an update on the sound issue. I found no resolution to the sound problem in the Win 7/ Realtek configuration. I was able to get the manager working and set the optical output to the default. Still no response from the link(no LED activity). I assume the MB is healthy, the optical link was working when the operating system was XP so I have been assuming the problem is the operating system. Further, it is not just the optical output that isn't working. I have NO sound on any outputs.
Not knowing where to go with this, I started over. I upgraded the operating system to windows 10, acquired all the necessary up-to-date drivers and installed them. The results are exactly the same. NO sound. I am considering the purchase of a new sound card as the final solution, unless someone has something else that might solve the problem!

Hello Warp9

Good suggestions. I had not checked that because the spdif was working under the XP system, and yes there are bios controls, the spdif is enabled, and the front panel was set at HD. I changed that to AC'97, saved the changes and exited. Still no joy. No sound. One thing I have noticed is that when I bring up the sound manager there are 3 entries Digital Output(Optical), Digital Output, and Speakers. Whichever is selected as default, if there is a sound source operating, the associated level indication of the default device registers the sound. there is no output from any one of the three outputs when selected despite the indication.

Good thought tho and many thanks for your effort, much appreciated.
