Here's my dilemma, I want to build a new system that utilizes an intel CPU, it's just going to be utilized for gaming. I found that you can buy a few relatively high performance Xeons, I.E. this guy: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E3-1241+v3+%40+3.50GHz&id=2341#price for relatively cheap, (I'm basing all this data off of Passmark). So, slap it together with a 1150 socket type mobo (which usually go for $50-100) and it looks to me like I'm saving $100-200 on an equivalent I7 build. Is there anything wrong this idea?

Solution
Generally speaking no, but the k edition i7 can be over clocked to increase lifespan of the cpu before underperforming. That said games are getting less and less cpu bound and those that still have higher requirements of the cpu generally would not utilize that much of either.

I would say go for the xeon, opening up a whole new gpu bracket, which for the central piece of a gaming build is far more important than higher cpu performance. IE, your gaining a lot more than you are sacrificing.

This system uses a Xeon 1231v3, and my research system has an i7 4790K at the moment. The i7 is overclocked to 4.6 Ghz and is about 10% faster than the Xeon in similar benchmarks for gaming. Passmark is a throughput, power, benchmark for processing, like rendering, it is not a speed benchmark, which is what gaming uses.

If all you want to do is gaming a good i5 is plenty. If you want to record, stream, and edit as well, I would recommend a Xeon. If you need every FPS you can get for the kill-shot advantage, you need an overclockable i7.
