Hello All, thanks for taking the time.

This has been an issue since before installing my SSD, but there are new issues as a result as well. I mostly cover it in the title- running Windows 7, when I open folders (indiscriminate: recycling bin, downloads, program files, anything) the system will either freeze or slow to a crawl. The progress bar at the top will slowly advance and sometimes just freeze. When it freezes, the taskbar disappears, then all files on the desktop, then everything, then it comes back after a very long time time. Sometimes i have to end it just to begin the process.

Infrequently, programs themselves will lock and i have to use task manager, but that happens more often when I am installing those programs. Currently i am trying to install Photoshop and it freezes after about 2%. Tried rebooting but its the same thing. I even have to cancel the process cause the process still hangs around.

With the drives, I installed a Kingston SSD recently and use it as my boot drive. I use my old 1TB spinning disc for storage and some of the bigger programs. Without fail, if i ever Reset the computer, this drive disappears. I have to completely shut down in order to have it come come back. Less frequently, the drive takes forever to access, sometimes going very slowly and sometimes completely breaks down like the SSD files i mentioned above. I have to use Task Manager to get it to come back sometimes.

That about covers it. Sorry about the book-long post but i wanted to cover as many problems as possible. I run Malware Bytes and SpyBot with some frequency, and use ESET NOD Smart Security. Connections are clean and i checked them recently. Average CPU temp around 56-59 C. I checked a million other similar threads and tried what they said and not much has helped. But if there are threads that relate please drop them here I may have missed it. Thanks again for helping i appreciate it.

Thanks for responding. Temp is usually around less than 60C at any given time when running OCCT test. I usually maintain at least 20% or more free space. Mem test showed no errors. Also it takes about 3 minutes for it to shut down while restart is almost instantaneous.

You're welcome.

I don't know what the solution to your problem is, but I can say that you should try re-installing, if you haven't tried.
That often fixes a whole host of problems, plus it gives you a good excuse to back up your things, which is always a good thing
to do.

Yeah I definitely agree, I think my best bet may be a fresh install. Heres the question though: do I do the reinstall on just the SSD or also the Spinning Disc? The HDD has two partitions: the one i use for storage is about 850GB. Windows XP (for Stability, I suppose) is installed on the remaining 100GB. Do you think that would cause any issue, that im using no OS on the storage disc and XP on another part of the partition? Should I delete the thing and use the whole thing as storage?

Though i should note that when i started having this issue i did do a fresh install a few months ago and it didnt really have any result. Doesnt mean it wouldnt help now

Thanks again!

That is a GREAT idea, totally classic troubleshooting, I feel like a dummy for not trying that. I am going to give it a crack and get back to you.

Though I hope it addresses the issue with the HDD- if there are no problems with JUST the SSD, what should I do? Get a new HDD and transfer everything?

Update: Unplugging the only other drive i had in there very noticeably from the start. Startup was nearly instantaneous, the shut down screen took about 15-20 seconds, nowhere close to the two minutes it could frequently take before. So two questions:

first: do I still need to run one ram stick at a time? or can i skip that now that i know its the drive thats offending?

Second, and perhaps most important: what does it mean?? haha do I have to buy another drive? I have tried running chkdsk even the full error check at reboot but I dont think it helped. I suppose this is a dumb question but what do I do now? :)

thanks again I really appreciate it!

This pretty much points to a bad drive. The Windows chkdsk does not help with failing hard drives really.
Replace the hard drive, I'm thinking if you run a disk check utility from Seagate is will come up with errors.

That did it! Thank you so much- buying a new unit was exactly what i needed to do. I replaced the spinning disc with a new 1TB hard drive and it works like a dream. Thanks again for the recommendation, i really appreciate it!
