I am stumped on this one guys, and I hope you all can help me. I've just got done building an entirely new PC and I've had a bad issue with power supplies. The computer itself is working absolutely perfect. Temps seems great, voltages in BIOS seem accurate, speed is amazing. So you may ask, what's the issue? Well I am getting coil whine from the PSU, and even worse when under load it goes to more of a grinding or clicking sound. I want to emphasize this is not a fan, I have checked every mechanical piece in my system. The coil whine I can get over, but the clicking makes me feel as if there is an underlining electrical issue such as a capacitor. But here is where it gets confusing. I have tried 3 separate power supplies, all of which had plenty of wattage but pertained to a bronze series. I understand the bronze series PSU is honestly crap especially for what I am running, but to have 3 separate power supplies do this has me questioning if they are the issue. The 3 power supplies I have tried are Corsair CX750M, Corsair CX850M, and the Thermaltake SMART 650W. I plan to move to an EVGA Supernova 850w later in the month, but I need to figure out what is the issue here. Thanks for any feedback, I need some big out of the box thinking here and I appreciate your time to read through this.

Computer Specs:

  • i7 6700k
    Gigabyte GA Z170X UD5
    Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200mhz
    EVGA GTX 960 FTW Edition
    Samsung 850 Evo 1tb
    Corsair H100i v2
    NZXT Phantom 410 case

Solution
Are you sure it isn't the graphics card? The two devices that tend to exhibit the greatest probability of coil whine are graphics cards and PSUs.

Hey thanks all. I just picked up a new EVGA 750w gold edition. About to plug in and see if it fixes my issue. If the issue persists I'm going to assume the motherboard is the culprit here.

Any other tips let me know!

So as much as I would love it to not be my motherboard the problem is still persisting. Though I will say the EVGA one has dampened the sound a bit. I may have to return the motherboard and get a new one. Le sigh.

So believe it or not I retesting the gpu today and it was clicking. I'm assuming a capacitor is causing it. I retested the old psu and it was having a similar issue. No idea how it happened, but a mix of both.

Tried a different gpu in my system, no click. Same with the new psu. Thanks for the input everyone.
