Your graphics card goes into an x16 slot. This is typically the top one. the x8/x8 is when dual cards are used and is in regards to the actual speed of the slot. Physically, the slots are x16, but their speed is split, for dual graphics, due to the limited number of PCI-lanes available. Intel has the need lanes, embedded on the CPU, for graphics. Slot count is different from board to board. For the CPU, the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, would be my pick.
Graphic cards use PCI express x16 slots for most part. In theory you can have as many GPUs as there are PCIe x16 slots. Problem is with some MBs that if you use two slots for two cards, second one or both may drop down to x8 speed but that may not drop performance of GPUs much.
Highest quality (and expensive) MBs may have all x16 slots running at x16. If you use 2 or more cards they have to be connected with a "Bridge" cable and you can use only 2 or more of same cards.
Drawback is that you actually don't get double of graphic power and available memory on GPUs doesn't add up, it stays at size single card has. It may also be difficult to set them up for best performance.
Generally, specially for beginners it's better to go for one top notch card than 2 or more weaker ones.
Unless you plan to game on roomfull of 144MHz monitors and on highest possible resolutions, there's nothing a top end GPU like GTX980 for instance could not handle with that processor.
You also may need higher rated PSU for two of those cards.
