Just looking for thoughts and opinions on this. I can get a Skylake i5-6500 with H110 motherboard or a Haswell i5-4690k with an H97 motherboard. Same price.

I'm quite torn on this as performance on the 2 sets seem almost identical. Upgradability isn't of concern in this case. It's going to be used long enough as-is that a whole new build will replace it when upgrades are needed.

i5-6500 has a passmark rating of 7044, and a single thread rating of 1943.
I5-4690K has a passmark rating of 7705 and a single thread rating of 2233.
If you can get a motherboard capable of overclocking, the "K" can go even higher.

If you will be using integrated graphics, the skylake 530 graphics is definitely superior.
in real life newer intel cpu is slightly faster. when looking at the build look at both mb check out the number of ram slots/sata ports and usb ports. in real life your going to lose three usb ports. one for the mouse one for the keyboard and one for a usb wifi dongle. some of the low end mb have only 3 or 4 usb ports. also as a tech the lower end mb are also a lot thinner to save money over the higher end cost mb.
