I looked around a bit, a viable alternative seems to be making my own media center like this:

Since I would only stream .mp4 files would this be a viable option? Do I need to do port-forwarding or mess with my router/network in any way?
Lastly, I heard a lot of good things like plex. What is it and how does it differ from a media center?
