It really sounds like the drive might be failing. An I/O (input output) error is most commonly connected to a hardware issue.
I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens, or at least with a different SATA port and different SATA cables on yours.
Since you don't need to recover any data, you could download its manufacturer's diagnostic tool to try and test the drive with it, or at least take a look at its SMART data.
