How to update drivers?

I'm just curious, does windows 8.1 automatically update drivers with "Windows Update"? And how would one know if their drivers are already updated?

I know I can just go to the manufacturers website and download and install them. But it just seems weird for me because I am worried I am going to install drivers when they are already updated. Like maybe I don't need them.. But I don't know how to tell.

Solution
when you go under system/device look under driver info it give you the data and rev of the hardware driver.
you can then look at vendor web page to see if the date and rev of the driver is old or the same.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-
vendor intel posts the date and the driver rev. all you need to know is if this driver newer then one on the mb web page.
