I'm looking to put together a photo and video editing PC that will also be used for general every day stuff with maybe a little bit of gaming on the side.

I'm thinking an Intel Core i7 6700 and 16GB (2x8GB) Dual Channel DDR4-2133MHz RAM. But I'm torn on a good 1151 motherboard.

I'd like it to be a little future proof so I'm looking for something with lots of connections, is reliable and has good support for new tech and features (like M.2, USB 3.1 Gen 2, Thunderbolt 3, etc.)

So far all I've found is the ASRock Z170 Extreme6+ ($260 AUD) and the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH ($330 AUD).

The ASRock has the benefit of coming with a USB 3.1 front panel (which I like) and is cheaper. While the Gigabyte has all Intel features and also has the addition of Thunderbolt 3... but a $70 premium is a bit much.

Thing is, I cant find any reviews or anything on the ASRock board but I have read of some problems with Gigabyte Z170 boards such as instability, BIOS and HDD problems.

Anyone have either of these boards or can offer some thoughts?

Hello cbqman,

You really cannot go wrong once you hit a certain price point (they all become mostly the same, imo). Check these motherboards out, they cover everything you ask for however, some offer two M2 ports and other only offer one:

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 5
MSI Z170A GAMING M5
Asus ROG Z170 Maximus VIII Hero (I have this, seemless setup no problems)

They are my choices mate, I don't believe you can go wrong with either one. If you want to spend more and have a few more features in the way of peripherals or extra M2/sata ports and the like , they have a more expensive version of each board!

Hope that helps :)
