Does anyone know if this is possible? I would like to try putting something like a Xeon X3380 in one, since they are over 3Ghz and are cheaper than equivalent Core 2 Quads. It would be a Minitower.

Solution
I know this is an older thread, but I didn't see where anyone definitively answered the question about the Optliplex 755/760 using Xeon processors.

From what I have read and what I have done, you absolutely can use any 3000 series 775 Xeon processor on these systems; no bios update needed. I have put a X3230 in the Optiplex 755, 760 and 960 as a direct replacement of either C2D or dual core pentium with no issues what so ever. So, I know for a fact that the X3230 works as a direct change out. Dell isn't going to tell you this anywhere in their spec sheets. I have another 755 waiting until I can get my hands on a X3380 to test on it as well, but I have absolutely no reason to think it won't work...

I know that X3xxx series xeons can be used, the 771 ones can be pinmodded. However, I would like to use a Socket 775 Xeon, and since a X3370 is about $40 compared to a Quad Q9550 being over $100, it seems to be a better choice. Has anyone tried any of the X33xx series socket 775 Xeon in either of these models or a Opti 780? I do not want to damage the CPU socket with a 771 mod.

i have see ones with the sticker work so i would imagine that would work fine. however, i have never seen a 775 xeon that hasnt been moded

maybe now show a compatible 775 motherboard [non server] and available ...

also look at skylake and all this have in common as well

775- no xeon support [non server] - 1151 - no xeon support [on 100 series server chipset only]

775 - ddr2/ ddr3 support - 1151 ddr3 and ddr4 support

to me its like a 1/2 butt platform stuck between transitions of platform changes - look how many cant upgrade there memory on 775 with todays modules cause there not compatible any more - in the end you may find you spend time and money on beating a dead horse

good luck

It's not really beating a dead horse, yes, it is old, but a 3Ghz or better quad core can beat a 4th Gen I3 and earlier Core i5s with a little overclocking. I do not have the money for haswell or Skylake currently, and 775 is what I have. (I am running a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz and a Pentium D 2.66 GHz)
I didn't ask whether you think I should do it or not, I just merely asked if someone knew if someone else had gotten that processor to work.

like wolfshadow said consumer boards [non server] for 775 as far as I know don't have xeon support listed in there cpu lists or bios support , but as you see around the web back then it seemed to of worked fine even with using that 771 to 775 adaptor ?

thing is is that dell and its dell bios as open to that as aftermarket boards like we got from asus -giga msi or asrock???

look over the dell forums on your model and see if anyone did it

I guess you would find some good info there

get a cheap chip from like e-bay and stick it in and see where you end up ?? it will work out or it will not

bottom line is none of this is officially supported by Intel or motherboard manufactures you do it at own risk and winging it all the way

onr thing to look at is how todays memory may not now be compatible with older 775 type boards

[for example]

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. It is possible that the HyperX 4GB memory modules are Single Rank as the latest builds of that part number are Single Rank. Up until recently 4GB modules were standard Dual Rank. Basically, the issue that can occur is that the memory module uses high capacity individual memory chips (DRAM) that the motherboard is not equipped to recognize. Usually, if a motherboard is able to recognized standard 8GB modules it should not have an issue recognizing Single Rank 4GB modules. A "1R" may be printed on the label which would indicate it as single rank. Otherwise, we can confirm this based on a reference number printed on the memory label that we can look up in our system. Other common issue with the DDR2/DDR3 combo motherboards that can be overlooked is that it only supports DDR2 OR DDR3 memory. This means you cannot have both DDR2 AND DDR3 memory installed at the same time, it is an either/or option. We do not currently support your PFG41C-M LX motherboard as we no longer manufacture memory that would be compatible with that motherboard. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

theres a few brand that still offer compatible memory sticks but you have to look hard and may not be what you really want [it maybe down to take what you can get ]
