I'm planning to build a SFF PC for CAD, design & gaming applications and could do with some input on the motherboard choice.

Here is what I am looking for:
- Must be Mini-ITX
- Works well with 6700k (chosen for single core speed due to many CAD programs only using single core)
- At least 16GB supported memory
- Sata M.2
- USB 3.1 & USB-C preferable
- Included WiFi is a plus
- Having the option to use DDR4 would be nice

What I'm not looking for:
- Integrated sound cards (I have an external DAC that is usually better than the integrated stuff)
- Gaming 'features' that I will never use (like ASUS keybot, etc)
- Brightly coloured components and pointless flashy graphics all over the place. Although, if the board has everything else that I need then I might be able to deal with it.

For GPU I'm planning to use a Radeon R9 Nano mounted at 90deg, to keep the form factor nice and small :)

I did have my heart set on a Gigabyte GA-Z170N WIFI, but I have discovered that it suffers from throttling problems due to lack of heatsinks on VRMs, especially when used with CPUs like the 6700k... so back to the drawing board.

Suggestions welcome!

Thanks

ASUS MAXIMUS VIII IMPACT

ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING

GIGABYTE GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)

Essentially you pay for what you get. The overclocking motherboards are designed for heavy duty purposes so that is what you want. Those are the boards that will have the proper quality for your professional applications. Mini ITX is very compact, so they are usually not as strong as larger sizes. And to power a high end CPU like the 6700K, the most important thing is to use a good motherboard, so you'll definitely want to look at the ones mentioned as your main pool for selection.

Should be a fun build! Let us know how it goes!
