Wouldn´t it be cheaper to buy two 600 watt psus than one 1200 watt psu?

I want to get a second r9 390x in my build with one fx 9590 and on r9 390x and thought a second psu would be cheaper than a new 1200 wapp psu.

if you're willing to spend so much on a couple of high end gpu's why do you wish to cheap out on psu's? 1200w is a lot even for a couple of 390x's. they don't pull more than 300w each. i don't know the rest of your specs but even a high end cpu overclocked would not put you over 750-800w total use.

it is the heart of the system and needs to be quality if you want your pc to last. post the rest of your specs and i'll be happy to help you figure out just how much power you really need. more than likely a nice 1000w or so would be enough and can be had for about $120 or so for a decent one. this would be less than a couple of decent 600w units.

I did a little bit of reading and it looks like the two psu's is possible. There are a whole bunch of disclaimers of course about feeding your system with different power supplies, different rails, may be bad, but that is above my head. If you want to go with the 2 PSU's the main obstacle you need to worry about is how you are going to power on the second PSU because the motherboard is usually what tell's your PSU to turn on.

The best way to do this seems to be have a daisy chain adapter which accepts both PSU's 24 pin motherboard connectors. Here is a link a review of one such daisy chain module. http://www.legitreviews.com/add2psu-daisy-chain-power-supply-adapter-review_1698

To address cheapness, it likely is cheaper to run 2 600 watt PSU's because there are plenty of lower quality 600 watt PSU's, where as at 1200 watts most PSUs are going to be at least gold efficiency, or of higher quality.

After all that I would recommend the 1200 watt, seems like much less of a headache.

Good luck,
