Hi all, I'm going to upgrade my laptop while it's still in good shape.

It has two RAM slots, populated with one 4GB stick from the factory. I can find no reference stating the maximum amount of memory the laptop will work with (64bit Windows 10). I don't see an answer searching here or at large on the internet, nor in the very helpful user manual (electronic version.)

Has anyone experience with this machine or the product line? I put two links below -- are either of these decent, good choices? I believe it takes PC3 1600 1.35v 204pin SODIMMs, such as these on Amazon or the Egg --

Thanks for advice or pointers!

Yes, the L denotes low power. 1.5 is for DDR3, 1.35 is for DDR3L.

The branding on your laptop has no bearing on the memory compatibility, unless the manufacturer decided to white list devices that would work in it. The memory compatibility is up to the memory controller in the computer, which in your case is integrated into your CPU. Your CPU's memory controller supports DDR3L (1.35V) at speeds of 1333 or 1600, and sizes up to 16 GB per channel. Good luck finding 16 GB SODIMMS for a reasonable price however.
The only specs I could find on your laptop list an Intel Core i3-4000M as the CPU. If the CPU is correct, it supports two channels at up to 32 GB of DDR3L 1333/1600.

I can't verify your links as neither of them work, but the specs of the RAM you listed look correct. DDR3L is low voltage DDR 3, which runs at 1.35 volts.

Thanks for your reply. I checked the laptop, and it lists that cpu indeed. Verified it has 4GB installed now. I thought there were two basic voltages, 1.35 and 1.5V -- the RAM and discussion I've seen lists those. The 'L' suffix seems to denote suitable for MAC (laptops?) and also that it is lower voltage; I'm not that familiar, and I have yet to find a listing for the laptop that shows the specs (gettin' old, I guess.)

I guess at ~$60.00 for 2x8 it's not an insane risk; and if I can get the right spec at least one stick will work, I was just hoping to get to 16GB and then swap in an SSD for a relatively low price supercharge, new life for old gear, etc. (then it's on to dual-boot with Linux....)

Thanks for your help.

Amazon lists this Crucial kit, 2x8GB 204 pin SODIMMs for $57.33 -- CT2K8G3S160BM is the part/model; the listing shows 1.4Volts.
Another Amazon listing, CT2KIT102464BF160B, same size sticks, shows 1.35V in the listing.

I looked at the part numbers you mentioned, and Amazon seems a little confused. However, in the descriptions for both, they list the memory as being dual-voltage capable, so should run at both 1.35V or 1.5V. Below the description, as you mentioned, it lists 1.4V, which isn't even a memory spec, so I can only guess where they pulled that number from.

Either kit will probably work the same.

Thanks a lot for your help - ordered this before seeing your last message,

Kingston HyperX Impact Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory (HX316LS9IBK2/16) .

It boots and works great. I was able to open Lightroom 4 (need to upgrade to 5) and edit RAW files, while browsing images in other programs and doing email, and reading forums. Cool beans.
