Does the router matter a lot regarding the connection speed?

I have a 50/50 Mbps Verizon FIOS. I'm using Actiontec router from when I still had DSL. I didn't want to pay for the rental fee for the new type so I just kept. I'm asking because I'm getting 3 Mbps for my Wifi internet. My router is in the living room since the ONT box is all the way in the front. MY room is all the way in the back...it have to pass through like 5 walls.

Does adding an additional router help? Do the two routers need to be connected with Ethernet cables or can they connect wireless?

Thanks.

also look at the lan over power lines kits. if your home a ranch or one where you can run ethernet lines. you could buy a newer router for faster wifi and then run a switch and hardline for desktop in the home.

Adding a second router/access point can help, Ideally you do want your router to be receiving data from an Ethernet link. connecting wirelessly will add more latency, especially if you are far away and don't have a strong signal.

Maybe you could run a long ethernet cable to a much closer router/access point for a stronger wifi signal, this should help improve your connection speed.

And the router does matter somewhat, they are always getting faster and better wifi range on new devices.

You could even benefit from upgrading your computer wifi device too if possible.

You have a lot of networking options available to you to provide a solution for your problem.

Having worked for Verizon FIOS their newer routers did in some cases give better signal over wifi. Keep in mind that they don't guarantee any connection speeds if you exceed 10ft line of sight. You have a few options though, you can 1. get a newer router/wifi NIC and avoid any rental fees; 2. get a wireless range extender; or 3. if they are replaceable try getting higher gain antenna for your current router. The only other options are to try to re-position the router so it better covers the house or apt, and you can try changing the channel it broadcasts on if you haven't already. By default it's set to 0 or automatic.

And just a little FYI Verizon FIOS doesn't support bridging or connecting 2 routers together, unless they changed that since I worked there last.

Would be very surprised if you couldn't turn any router into an access point unless they have no LAN ports.
