ASUS P5WD2 Won't Detect GPU in Slot 1 - Beeps

So I just recently picked up an ASUS P5WD2 motherboard, the non-premium version, along with a GeForce 7950 GT, but I'm having a few rather strange problems.

First off, my board appears to have AMI BIOS version 107. Also here is the link to the manual:
View Manual

So here's my problem. When I insert the GPU into the first PCIe slot, the blue one, the board has 1 long and 3 short beeps, nothing displays on the screen. I have read online from conflicting sources, some say this is a memory error, while others say it's a video error, and some say it's a video memory error... though when I insert the GPU into the second PCIe slot which runs at 4x speed, it POSTs just fine, a single beep, image displays fine, I was able to install Windows XP. Though the GPU is not running at its full potential at 4x instead of 16x.

It has the same 1 long and 3 short beeps if no GPU is inserted. One thing that's also strange is if I insert my conventional PCI-based GPU, a GeForce 6200, the board won't boot at all. The fans start for less than a second, and nothing. Even if the BIOS is set to check for PCI graphics first. I know the card isn't faulty because I recently tested it. I tried in two different PCI slots, 1 and 2, didn't check 3.

I've also tried another PCIe GPU from an old working desktop. I'm absolutely certain this GPU works, and it has the same symptoms. When plugged into slot 1, 1 long, 3 short beeps. No GPU inserted, 1 long, 3 short beeps. Plugged into slot 2, POSTs fine, image displays, single short beep.

I am currently stumped, though I'm thinking about picking up some different RAM from a local shop to try, I currently have one stick of 2 GB PC5300 DDR2 RAM, looks like hynix(?) brand. Though it appears to work fine when plugged into slot A1, with the GPU in PCIe 2. I'm still not so sure if the RAM isn't faulty, I haven't tested it.

Also I have a Pentium 4 530/531/531J(?) HT @ 3.0 GHz, not that that matters. No I'm not overclocking, and I have tried resetting the CMOS. Also upon hard resetting the CMOS with a GPU in PCIe 1, it has 1 long, 3 short beeps then 2 short beeps after. The second boot, 1 long, 3 short, then 1 short beep.

If you've read this far, then you seem dedicated to help, thank you. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be? Should I try a BIOS update?(I really don't want to in case I have to return it.) Could it be the RAM? Faulty MB/PCIe port? Are there any settings I need to change in the BIOS? Could it be my PSU?

It delivers 400 Watt max, 16 amps on the +12V1 and V2 rails. I only have one 4-pin connected to the motherboard, which the manual says is supported. And yes I plugged the 6-pin into the GPU.

Thanks for reading this wall of text, and please help and give suggestions if you can.

Thanks for the heads-up, I thought about asking that exact question as well. As long as performance isn't too limited I can live with it. it would just be nice to get the PCIe 1 slot working, as well as figuring out why the PCI card causes it not to boot. I'll have to try my PCI WiFi card and see if it causes the same. Still hoping to find a solution.

Thanks for the help. I may try updating the BIOS in the future when I get the guts to do so. Scares me every time that something's going to go wrong, power-outage if I don't have a UPS, corrupted medium, completely coincidental hardware failure, etc. As long as it works, I want to keep it that way. I might still try different RAM and try to find a different motherboard. If not, I think I can live with it. Though I do wonder if it's a BIOS or physical hardware issue.

I have the same problem in my ASUS P8Z77V LX, my GTX 1070 from Gigabyte, it's the G1 Gaming version...

When i put on the first blue slot it doesn't recognize it! The PC boot to the igpu, i have a 2500k, but when a put on the second pci express it works flawless... without any problems.

I've tried everything: Updated BIOS, UPDATED GPU BIOS, cleared CMOS, Taking of the Battery for hours and reinsertted, changed the PSU to a 1000W, Tested with another memories, tried with another GPU, i inserted a GTX 760 on the first slot and the 1070 on second, it detects the 760 but, even if my 1070 turns on the lights the motherboard doesn't detected. I've swaped it, put the 1070 on the first pci express and the 760 on second, guess what, the mobo and windows detected the 760 and doesn't show m7 1070, then i plugged a monitor cable on my 1070, the windows doesn't detected but aida64 shows that my monitor have a gtx 1070 connected to the DVI port.

Crazy uh?

Don't know what can i try anymore, i just give up...There's no fix on internet for that, i spent almost a month searching and doesn't found a solution.

I had the same problem with my Asus Sabertooth p67 and Gtx 1070. I found the solution for me. I changed a setting in bios. Go to advanced mode and click the AI tweaker tab. Than you see AI overclock tuner. Click on it and select X.M.P. I dont know if this option is available on other brands, but hey, its worth a try.

Let me know if it worked for you!
