Hi everyone

Just in the process of installing multibeast and whilst checking my specs noticed that my mobo

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5188#sp

has a 32 bit operating system limitation...

Strange because the site warns that 16gb ram is supported but will report less when using a 32 bit operating system, which it's limited to. The thing is I have the 64 bit version of windows 7 on the machine, it report the correct amount (8gb) of memory; and I've never had any problems with it.

Question : is this an actual limitation, if so will having a 64 bit version on my machine ( so the memory can be used better / support 64 bit programs etc .. ) be detrimental to hardware / software etc..

Thanks in advance

Ben

the limitation isn't from the board, it's from the 32-bit OS that you MIGHT be using (such as WinXP). they put that disclaimer on ALL motherboard spec pages.

32bit can use 4G of RAM
32bit with PAE can use 64G of RAM (this is likely what the server OS does, and i think most 32bit Linux)
64bit can use... i dunno, a few hundred G of RAM
You seem to be getting a little confused, or you've misinterpreted what you've read on the Gigabyte specs page.

32-bit Windows can only address up to 4GB of installed RAM (slightly less actually) but installing more than 4GB won't harm anything, it would just be a waste of money.

64-bit Windows has no such limitation, it can address as much RAM as the motherboard supports (16GB for that board).

Since you are running 64-bit Windows anyway I don't understand what your problem is, if indeed there is one.

"The thing is I have the 64 bit version of windows 7 on the machine, it report the correct amount (8gb) of memory; and I've never had any problems with it".

Why should you have any problems with it when there's nothing wrong?

This is true for the desktop editions of Windows, but not Windows Server. For example, 32-bit Windows Server 2003 R2 supported 64GB of RAM.

Thanks for all the answers guys; I was presuming that it was a board limitation - I was aware of 32 v 64 for memory caps but guess I just misread the specifications about the board from the site. All the best - Ben.

Indeed, knowledge can be confusing.

Paradoxically, lack of knowledge can be even more confusing.
