All modern games run very poorly at or near recommended settings for my specs. I have fairly nice components, can someone please tell me what's wrong with my component combination? I've reinstalled windows many times since building this machine. I just can't get the performance I think I should be getting.

OS: Windows 10
CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition
VGA: EVGA GeForce GTX 680 FTW+
Ram: 4x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series [Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL]
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
Power supply: 1000 watt

My OS is on an SSD [Mushkin Enhanced Chronos: MKNSSDCR120GB]

If you're sure the temps are good then that's not an issue. If you're not overclocking then the board is fine. It may be that you're experiencing the low core performance of the FX cpu in comparison to Intel and the fact that the GTX 680 is not really much better than a GTX 960. Also, even though Far Cry can use multiple cores, it focuses on a single core which is really bad for you with an FX cpu. If you want superior...

The GPU is old, but quite fast. Its very slightly better than the gtx 960.

I suspect its your cpu giving you problems. The fx 8350 is decent in heavily multithreaded applications but craps out in unoptimized games.

Like basroil said, what are you getting on what games?

If you are using the stock cpu cooler you may be having temperature issues and need to upgrade to a better cooler like the Hyper 212 EVO from Cooler Master. Are you overclocking? The board you're using is no good for overclocking the fx-8350 since it lacks heat sinks for the vrm. What brand and model power supply are you using? Try installing HWinfo to see if you're getting high temps from cpu or gpu that could be causing problems.

I use the CORSAIR Hydro Series H60 (CWCH60), my cpu temp never goes above 40 degrees Celsius under heavy load. My gpu stays below 70 C under heavy use, below 50 C with older games. I used to use the ASRock 970 EXTREME3 mother board, should i reinstall that one? I can't remember the psu, but is is a Rosewill brand.

If you want superior gaming performance you should consider an Intel cpu in the future.
