Hello everyone. Im currently looking to upgrade my cpu for a smoother gaming experience. My current setup is an fx 4130 cpu, an asus gtx 750 ti gpu, and a 500 watt atx power supply. My question is whether I would be able to upgrade without having to get a new motherboard or power supply. My motherboard is the MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) (MS-7641). I was looking to see if i could upgrade to an amd fx 6300 if that would be compatible to upgrade to. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated thank you guys.

I would not use that motherboard for gaming with a FX6300. It is a very low-performance motherboard. It has too few power phases and no heatsinks on the power delivery system. You will get thermal throttling of the motherboard which will limit your 'action' There are some things you can do to mitigate this, but they will hasten the demise of your board. The Wattage of your PSU is fine. What make/model is it?

Have you overclocked your existing CPU? That's the first thing I would try for more performance, and it's cheap.

This is relatively cheap and an can be overclocked very well too.

And this is about as good as it gets, on a budget.

However, at the last price, it's high enough that changing to Intel should be considered.

Solution
I knew that you have a mATX motherboard. The motherboards I have suggested are ATX because they are the best ones. If you are using this system for gaming and you want to stay with AMD, then the only good option for a mATX motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3. Modern versions of this board in the USA have heatsinks on the VRMs and it will run and overclock a FX6300 well. I would not run a FX83?? on this board because of its few power phases, and I would be very concerned about the durability of the power delivery system under gaming load, especially if the CPU were overclocked.

If you are considering a FX8320 and a new motherboard, then look very hard at finding the money to go with Intel.
