ok, so i recently added a 1Tb HDD to my system and did a fresh install of windows 7 on it, and now im trying to format the old HDD that i have. When i go to my computer and click format it just says cannot format. So i went to computer management and it shows both C and D drives are the primary partition. How can i get it to let me format the original drive?

Solution
that'll be because you didn't change the bios boot order.

I think you need to install 7 again. dump everything you want to keep onto the drive that you want to be the secondary.
Turn the machine off
Unplug power from the secondary drive
Install windows
Wait until it is finished
turn machine off
connect power to both drives
go into bios
make sure that the new drive is the boot drive
then start it up
your secondary drive should appear
makes files safe on the main drive
format the secondary.
can you show us a picture of your disk management screen?

I suspect that you have the small system partition on one disk and windows on the other, a symptom of installing windows with both drives plugged in, and with that system partition already existing on one of them.
