Hello all!

I just inherited a fairly old Mac from a uncle in exchange for a new PC and I'd like to wipe it completely. I don't need any of the apps or files that were installed so no worries about deleting everything (actually deleting everything is preferable). I'd basically like to make this Mac as fresh as opening it for the first time.

One issue I'm having is I'm unable to boot into OS X Utilities, which is supposedly done by holding Command + R during restart. Tried this about 30 times but it just ends up loading to desktop. Is there another way of accessing the Utilities? Or some way to find out why ⌘+R isn't working?

This is my first Mac and I have no idea what I'm doing, so with regards to system specs, I'm not really sure what to post but here's an attempt:

OS X Version 10.6.8 (10K549)
Kernel version: Darwin 10.8.0
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Hope that's enough info to get started at least. Any and all help is always appreciated!

First question is do you have the OS X Install disks? If so boot from it and runs disk utilities; if you don't have the install disk you need to get set before you try an wipe it.

Also Cmd-R need to pressed immediately after power-up, if it's booting normally it sounds like you are pressing the keys too late.
