Hey Everyone,

I have a workstation rig doing some large scale image work in Photoshop, but now I'm looking to expand into 4k video editing (Premier, AfterFX) as well as 3D model rendering & 3D animation (Blender). I've been researching like crazy through these forums trying to find the right GPU upgrade for my workstation. This is my current setup, and I'm looking to replace my old 8600 GTS SLI pair:

i7-5820k 6-core + Raystorm XSPC waterblock
MSI X99A Gaming 7 (I'm not a gamer, btw)
2 x nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS in SLI
32 GB G.Skill DDR4 2800 RAM
960 GB M500 Crucial SSD, 10+ GBs Hd's, etc
1000 watt Thermaltake Toughpower PSU
Windows 7 64bit

-- The cards I'm currently considering:
Gaming Cards (I don't game, but the price point & ram price is attractive):
Nvidia GTX970 , 4GB (~$350)

Workstation Cards:
AMD FirePro W5100 , 4 GB ( ~$325)
Nvidia PNY NVS 810 , 4 GB ( $629 , and perhaps overkill for my needs?)
PNY Quadro M4000 , 8 GB ( $824, way out of budget, but is it worth it?)

-- My Questions:
Is it crucial to find a card with Open GL for rendering?
How many stream processors or cuda cores would I need?
Is Nvidia is more stable than AMD?

I've seen A LOT of information on both sides, Gaming GPU vs Workstation GPU, and would love some additional feedback and suggestions. I need a PCI 3.0 x16, 4k resolution, and a minimum 4 video outs would be nice.

I feel comfortable around the $350 budget range, but would consider up to $600 if I know if the features are worth the extra money.

If you can give me your advice on these cards, or possibly suggest some cards that I haven't listed, I'd greatly appreciate it!!!

Cheers,

Bob

Do I make money off of rendering? Not yet, as the 3D work is a new aspect of my business. Would the 8 GB card render things twice as fast as the 4 GB cards? Or is the render speed related to a different feature?

Would you still recommend a workstation card vs gaming card for Open GL? Any advice on Cuda Cores / Stream Processors?
