How many years would an i5 6600k overclocked to 4.2 ghz last for gaming?

Solution
I would say at least 3 years, perhaps longer. Part of the reason being simply enough the diminishing returns of Intels development in both thermals and frequency.

Heck, my Xeon X3450's and X3470's from circa 2009 are still quite strong, and that puts them at 7 years old now.

Most upgrades right now are feature driven, not from a lack of raw CPU power.

I just replaced a still strong 2600K after 5 years. Mostly for new motherboard features. I expect to get at least 5 years out of my new 6700K as well.
