GPU hotter than before after applying new thermal paste?

A few days ago i moved my system into a new case. the Sharkoon VS4 (It's just temporarily until i can afford a better one). The case has 1 120mm intake fan in the front and 1 120mm exhaust fan in the back. I noticed that my grapics card (GTX 570 Phantom) was very dusty. So I took it apart, cleaned it, applied new thermal paste (amazan T12) and put it back together. Before all of this i had max temeratures of 75 °C in FurMark under full load. Now i get 98 °C and I idle at around 60 °C. I tried everything i can with the fans in the case. I added another one in the front (the case is limited to 3), I reversed airflow. Nothing seems to have helped. The gpu fans also spin at a 100% percent. The only thing I can think of is that i didn't use any alcohol to remove the previous thermal paste. Could that cause any problem?

yes, especially if you didnt use something like coffee filters so as to not leave any residue

too much paste is as bad as not enough

There lies your problem my friend. You have to clean off the old thermal paste before you can apply the new one. Doesn't matter how new it is, you're still going to have to clean it off. Preferably with a 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. But I usually just use whatever I have at home. So, I suggest cleaning it off and doing the paste all over again.

I did clean it off , just not with alcohol. Sorry for not making that clear earlier. I will just buy some Isopropyl alcohol when I get the chance. Does it really make that big of a differece what you use to clean the thermal paste?

Whoops, I misread that. I thought you said you didn't clean it off. It shouldn't matter as long as it's completely off from your GPU. How did you apply the thermal paste?

It should be completely off. There is nothing left that's visible. I made a dot in the center of the gpu and put the heatsink back on. didn't spread it around or anything.

I did use toilet paper, however there wasn't any residue visible. I also don't think I applied too much. I applied about as much as in this picture http://www.circuitremix.com/images/124/apply_1.jpg
