I am building a new rig and have order a set of 16gb (8x2) g. skill raw 1866mhz. Would it be worth trying to get the ram from my old rig to work with it 8gb (4x2) corsair vengence 1600mhz?

Solution
With a 6350, might get them to run at 1600, all 4 and in dual channel, would start with the 1600 sticks in slots 1-3 from CPU get them set to spec, then raise the DRAM voltage to 1.6 and the CPU/NB voltage to 1.25, save, exit and shut down, then try adding the 8GB sticks in slots 2-4 and give it a try ;)

Never hurts to try given you own the old RAM and have already ordered the new RAM. Though unless you really need 24 GB of RAM instead of 16 GB, it's not worth sweating over if they don't get along.

I don't really need 24gb of ram. This is my first from scratch build and I was just curious if other than the obvious that they would all run at 1600mhz are there serious disadvantages or are there any real advantages to doing what i propose

It is better if you sell your old ram. It will not be used, it will make your other ram work slower, and it may cause problems/instability. Not that it will- but there is a small chance that it may, especialy if you will try setting your own ram settings.

What are the model #s of the DRAM, as long as you have them it's worth a try, and if they will play, might be able to run all at 1866 (if a good 1600 set), and regardless, if they will play, should run in dual channel mode, contrary to the above - also let us know the CPU and mobo

One more question about this for you Tradesman1. This is going to be a gaming rig I was wondering if you think it would be better try and get these 2 sets of ram to work nicely together or would I see better game performance by just sticking with the 16 gb set and overclocking it to like 2133 mhz?
