I have an ARRIS docsis 3.0 modem and a constant connection of 50 Mbps...that is until I plug in my router. When plugged into my router it varies tremendously and never gets above 30 Mbps. My wireless is even worse averaging around 10 Mbps. Any ideas? Thanks.

$20 may be a bit on the low side...$25 or $30 may be more realistic but there are $20 routers. Really any 802.11n router will work fine. Most say they run 300m. I would try to avoid unknown brands but anything from tplink, netgear, asus, linksys and other larger companies will be fine.
It depends on the exact version number but you are talking about a router that is getting close to 15rs old. Think about how slow a pc was that many years ago.

That router is best used as a shelf decoration. Even a $20 modern router will likely outperform that.

A $20 router. I could go for that. Seriously, how much should I spend on a router. Other than my PC I have a VOIP that plugs in. I have a PS3 and PS4 that are close enough to plug into it. I don't really need wireless right now. If I did, it might be for the new Nintendo console or perhaps in the future steaming gameplay from my PC to the living room.
